Heywood Painting Donated to September’s Great Art for Great Reads Auction

American Realist Artist Anne Heywood has donated an original painting to the Waldoboro (Maine) Public Library’s 2023 Great Art for Great Reads online auction in September. “Bridges,” a pastel on gold leaf painting, 10.5″ x 7.25″, depicts a bridge in silhouette at dusk against a late sunset sky, with suggestions of bridge road lights, shack, safety reflectors, and moving water.

“Bridges connect and bridges separate,” said Heywood. “It all depends on how you look at it. This small painting carries that kind of message with it.”

Heywood goes on to explain that the technique of painting pastels on gold leaf was something she discovered while experimenting with the media. “I was looking for a way to make special subjects precious. By placing pastel over the gold leaf I am able to incorporate the gold leaf as an element of texture and effect, as well as using it to “frame” the subject. In “Bridge” there is an additional custom element; the surface of the entire painting was first coated with a textured layer unique to this piece. So that “frame within a frame” effect is made even more obvious and truly sets off the scene.”

The 2023 Great Art for Great Reads online auction runs from September 1 – 15 at biddingowl.com. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Anne Heywood’s painting “Bridge” are to be donated to the Waldoboro Public Library.
