Treat yourself to a week of pastel painting
this summer in beautiful mid-coast Maine. Based at an
1830’s New England farmhouse and barn in Waldoboro,
Maine, the Heywood Artist Retreat Week begins with a
welcoming reception on Sunday evening (7/25, from 5 – 7),
followed by five full days of art, including painting
demonstrations and instruction, excursions to local scenic
areas for plein air painting, sketching, and photo opportunities,
painting in the air conditioned Barn studio, and more.
The Heywood Artist Retreat is limited to nine participants,
with much individual attention offered to each person.

provided upon registration.
Includes five days of art instruction, Welcoming Reception, “Lobster/Steak Bake” (one guest per participant to “Bake” for an additional fee). Does not include accommodations, other meals, transportation, any activity fees, or supplies. Free 3-hour hands-on oil pastel workshop
for adults. Learn how to paint with oil pastels with
step-by-step professional guidance. Materials provided.

begins with a demonstration, while the rest of the day
is dedicated to painting your masterpiece. Plenty of
one-on-one guidance for each participant. Bring your

Pastel Painting
Thursdays: Focus on Composition
April 29th – June
3rd (7 weeks)
Composition can either “make” or “break” a
good painting. Learn how to see composition and how to
choose and utilize different compositional plans in your
pastel paintings. Every class includes instruction/demonstration,
plus plenty of guidance painting your masterpieces. Bring
your own reference materials (still life objects, photos,
etc.) to each class. Suggested materials list provided
upon registration.
Pastel Painting
Workshop
May 1st, 9:30 – 4
Give yourself the gift of a full day of
pastel painting this spring! Saturday morning includes
a demonstration, and is followed by class painting time
for the rest of the day. Plenty of one-on-one guidance
provided at your easel. Bring your reference materials
(still life objects, photos, etc.) and wear work clothes.

Pet Portraiture in Pastel Weekend
May 15
and 16, 2010 (9:30-4 each day)
Spend a weekend
painting your pet’s portrait! Workshop begins with
a demonstration, followed by step-by-step painting instruction,
with plenty of individual attention. Learn how to get
a likeness of your pet, and how to render fur, feathers,
and markings. Bring good photos of your subject, and
pastel supplies. Suggested materials list and tips on
how to take your pet’s photo for the painting reference
are provided upon registration.
Pastels Made Easy Weekend
June 19 and 20, 2010 (9:30-4 each day)
A “must” course
for new pastel painters and those who are “newly” returning
to pastels. Learn why soft pastels is such a popular
medium today in a two-day workshop packed with information.
Based on my book Pastels Made Easy (Watson-Guptill Publications,
NYC, 2003), this workshop is composed of hands-on step-by-step
instruction covering basic pastel topics, such as painting
techniques, correcting errors, and organizing the painting
process. Suggested supply list provided upon registration.
Beyond the Basics Weekend
October 9 and
10, 2010 (9:30-4
each day )
Tailored to the intermediate student, this
workshop begins with a quick review of basic pastel techniques
and materials, followed by a pastel demonstration with
ongoing explanations using advanced pastel painting techniques.
Plenty of individual guidance while working on your own
masterpieces. This workshop is held indoors in a comfortable
climate controlled space. Suggested materials list provided
upon registration.
